  • Calendula officinalis (Marigold) is used to maintain overall skin health and support the body’s ability to regenerate skin cells naturally. (Klouchek-Popova E, Popov A, Pavlova N, KrÅsteva S. “Influence of the physiological regeneration and epithelialization using fractions isolated from Calendula officinalis”. Acta Physiol Pharmacol Bulg. 1982;8(4):63-7.PMID: 7185264).

  • Hamamelis virginianum (Witchhazel) has long been used by Native Americans. Witchhazel has been investigated clinically on numerous occasions for its ability to support skin health. (Swoboda M, Meurer J. “Treatment of atopic dermatitis with hamamelis ointment”. Br J Phytother. 1991;2:128–132). (Korting HC, Schafer-Korting M, Klovekorn W, et al. “Comparative efficacy of hamamelis distallate and hydrocortisone cream in atopic eczema”. Eur J Clin Pharmacol. 1995;48:461–465). 11. Can pets' ringworm spread to humans?

Ringworm can easily be spread from cats and dogs to people, and young children are at an increased risk of contracting ringworm.  For this reason it is important to treat ringworm in pets quickly and effectively. It is also a good idea to limit direct contact between infected pets and other animals or people.  Ringworm in humans causes patches of thick, scaly skin that may be itchy and cause hair-loss, as in pets.

12. How can I prevent ringworm in my pets?

Since the fungi that cause ringworm are widespread and commonly found on the skin of even healthy animals and humans it is impossible to completely prevent exposure.  Routine hygiene can go a long way to preventing excessive contamination with fungi though. The healthier the animal, the less chance there is of infection by ringworm fungus and any other source of infection or parasitic infestation.

Keep your pet’s coat and living conditions clean and don’t share grooming equipment or similar items with other pets especially at cat or dog shows where your pet may be exposed to a high concentration of fungi from infected animals. If your pet spends time in a cattery or in communal kennels, it is a good idea to bath or spray your pet with an antifungal agent upon return.

13. What else can I do to help my pet?

Follow the dietary recommendations for optimal health and immune functioning:

Many holistic vets will agree that the more raw food (as opposed to cooked meals or dried commercial pet food) the animal eats, the fewer general health problems there will be. Ideally the best diet for a cat or dog is one which most closely resembles that which he would find in the wild.

For cats, who are largely carnivorous, this should consist of mainly raw meat (minced beef and chicken, chicken livers) mixed with a little bone meal and a small amount of some grated carrot or finely chopped greens like spinach.  Dogs will do well if more chopped and grated raw vegetables are added to their diets.

We also recommend raw meat and raw bones for dogs, mixed with grated raw vegetables and chopped salads. A teaspoon or two of olive oil added to the meal every day (depending on size) will also be beneficial. Do not give your animals any milk at all - nor products containing sugar. Animals that follow this type of diet are usually completely disease and allergy free and live to a ripe old age.

Remember that you should not try to change your pet's diet overnight, especially if the animal is elderly. Slowly introduce new foods and allow the digestive system to become accustomed to the new diet.
